Today is all about the #PowerofYouth. We've already shared how our Tŷ Hafan Scout Group have won a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and here’s a a great blog from our wonderful Port Talbot Shop team, our young volunteers Michelle and Sophie, and, shop manager Alison.

Michelle’s Story - ‘Our customers call me Smiler’

“My name is Michelle and I work at Tŷ Hafan’s shop in Port Talbot. I have been volunteering for over 5 years now and I really enjoy it.

“I have some learning difficulties but that has never stopped me from volunteering. Alison and Lynne, my managers, have right from the start helped me to build my experience and confidence and tell me that I can turn my hand to anything!

“I decided to volunteer for Tŷ Hafan as I want to help the charity make money for the children.

“I help out in the shop by working on the till and serving customers. I also sort the clothes that are donated and then steam/hang and price them up so that they are ready to be sold on the shop floor.

“I enjoy using the till as it helps me with my maths. I also like to chat to the customers and help them with selecting their items and with any queries they have and I always make them smile and laugh when they are in the shop.

“Ali, my manager, has said that I am very much a people person and I am very eager to please my fellow volunteers and customers. She also says I have the biggest smile on my face every day and our customers call me “Smiler”.

“Volunteering makes me very happy and I love it. I have learned so many new skills. Sometimes Ali tells me I have to have a day off, but I love volunteering very much at Tŷ Hafan and would work every day if I could!

“The year before last, I visited the hospice to see how the money that the shops make helps the children, I did find it sad but it made me feel proud to be part of the charity.

“There was an open day at the hospice and when we went around my friend chucked a sponge at me in the stocks to raise money for the charity!

“My managers, Alison and Lynne, are amazing to work for and I enjoy every moment of it and I also love all of the other volunteers. I am really grateful for having the opportunity to volunteer for the shop and charity.”

Sophie’s Story - ‘I have learned so many new skills’

“My name is Sophie and I am 25 years old, I also volunteer at the Port Talbot shop. I have some learning difficulties but I was welcomed at Port Talbot shop by my manager Ali who has supported me.

“I have volunteered for five years and really enjoy it. I have learned so many new skills and can turn my hand to most things in the shop. I work on the tills serving customers and help them with their purchases. I sort clothes, steam and tag them ready to sell. I currently work one day a week but I am always available to help out at other times if I am needed. I have visited the hospice too and have seen first-hand how volunteering helps the children. I am very proud to be part of the team. I chose Tŷ Hafan as it helps families and sick children.”

Alison’s Story – 'Without our volunteers we just couldn’t do what we do’

“My name is Ali and I am the manager of Port Talbot Charity Tŷ Hafan shop. Without the support of our volunteers who work at my shop we just could not do what we do.

“Our volunteers who work with me enable me to generate the much-needed income that is necessary for the charity to continue and allows me to complete other tasks while they are volunteering.

“Our volunteers work on the shop floor and in the back room, sort all of the donations that are donated daily, they steam and tag them ready for re-sale. Without this support it would be impossible for the shop to function as there is only one full time manager and a part time deputy in the shop.

“Michelle and Sophie are two of my youngest volunteers and have volunteered with me for over five years now. Volunteering has helped them learn new skills and develop their confidence. They are both amazing young women and a huge asset to my team of volunteers.

“Tŷ Hafan could not provide the service that they do to the children and families of Wales, without all of our amazing volunteers. All of my volunteers are amazing, so thanks to each and every one of you!”
