Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

We are aware that the coronavirus outbreak is a time of concern for our families, volunteers and staff. Be assured that we are constantly monitoring the developing coronavirus situation and following guidance based on the latest information from the Welsh Government and Public Health Wales.

Protecting our families, our staff and volunteers is our number one priority.

Further information for our families, supporters, volunteers and staff is detailed below. 


Keeping our children and families safe and supported remains our key focus along with ensuring the staff caring for them are also kept as safe as possible. Many of the children and young people we care for are in the high-risk category, and therefore, we have made difficult but necessary adaptations to how we deliver this support to ensure they, and their families, are safe. We are keeping in touch with our families regularly with updates, but here is a list of our current measures:

  • End-of-life care is continuing and will continue throughout the pandemic.
  • Hospice stays continue to be available on a case-by-case basis for those families in need of support. Get in touch with us via your family support practitioner or community nurse if you feel you require an admission. We will need to do pre admission screening checks to ensure we minimise any risks.
  • We have a well established virtual care and support programme for our families isolating at home. This includes telephone and video communication sessions with our family support and play teams, a ‘Tŷ Hafan Families’ private Facebook page and around-the-clock phone support.
  • We have a private Facebook page for our bereaved families called the ‘Butterfly Group’ – do get in touch if you wish to join.
  • The safety of children, families and staff is taken very seriously at the hospice and our care staff are equipped with high-quality PPE. Any family visitors will also be asked to wear appropriate PPE in communal areas.
  • We continue to be vigilant in terms of cleanliness and sterilisation at the hospice and have strict guidance around social distancing.
  • Only supported families and care staff are permitted at the hospice – but if you or your family members have developed symptoms, do not visit until you have called us. 

Most of all, we want you to know that we are always here. Contact your family support practitioner if you have any questions, need some information or just want to chat. If you can’t make contact with the family support team then please ring the hospice (029 2053 2201) - we’re here 24/7 for you.


We want to say a big thank you to each and every one of our amazing volunteers for sticking by and remaining patient with us while we paused and un-paused volunteering activities throughout the pandemic. We are pleased to announce that all 19 of our charity shops across Wales are now open (hopefully for good!) and we are gradually welcoming volunteers back to different areas of the charity.

We appreciate that while restrictions in Wales are starting to lift, some of our volunteers may still be shielding and some may not yet feel comfortable enough to return to volunteering. We’d love to have you back by our sides, but only when you are ready.

Please do contact us if you would like to discuss returning to volunteering in more detail before you make a decision or if you would like more information on how we are keeping our volunteers safe. We are here to support you and to answer any questions you may have.

We are always looking to expand our wonderful team of volunteers, so if you have a few hours each week to support Tŷ Hafan, please do get in touch. We have many opportunities across the charity and are in a position where we can now re-introduce new and existing volunteers back into our shops and departments.

Please note that in line with Welsh Government directives, our main office and hospice is closed to non-essential visitors, and this sadly includes our supporters. As soon as this changes we will let you know.

Our teams are working hard from home, but it may take a little longer for them to get back to you right now. Rest assured your call/email is important to us and we'll be with you as soon as possible.


We have an amazing team at Tŷ Hafan who are working hard to ensure that we continue supporting children and families during this unsettling time. 

In line with government recommendations, we have strengthened existing measures to minimise the risk of infection. This includes asking members of non-care staff to work from home where this is possible and restricting access to Tŷ Hafan’s buildings. 

Despite many of Tŷ Hafan’s teams working remotely, we are still working together to rise to the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic.  

Our shops

All of our 19 shops are now open and following the most up to date COVID-19 guidelines. Donations are being accepted but we ask that you call ahead to ensure that the shop has room for your donation before dropping it off.  Our Penarth shop is operating an appointment system for taking donations, and all shop opening hours and contact details can be found here

When visiting our shops, there will be signage advising if there is a maximum customer restriction in place, which we kindly ask you to follow. In shops without a restriction,  we politely ask you to be considerate of others, especially at busy times when distancing may be difficult. We also ask that face masks continue to be worn in the shops by all those who are not exempt, and that the hand sanitiser is used when entering and leaving the shop.

The safety of our customers, staff & volunteers is of paramount importance to us, so we thank you for your support and for following the guidance, helping us to keep everyone safe and well.
