darren’s ‘five days of fitness’ challenge for tŷ hafan

Valleys personal trainer Darren Lukaris is set to undertake his third fundraising challenge for us next week, starting on Bank Holiday Monday. Darren, whose little sister Demi receives care and support from Tŷ Hafan, will be joined by colleagues and clients to tackle Five Days of Fitness at the gym he runs in Ebbw Vale. Here he explains what this challenge will entail and what’s motivating him to do it.

Ebbw Vale’s Darren Lukaris is no stranger to fundraising for Tŷ Hafan. Fitness fanatic Darren has already fundraised for us twice previously, with a tyre-flipping challenge at a Brynmawr gym before lockdown and a 12 Exercises of Christmas event.

Darren and DemiHis younger sister, 14-year-old Demi Leigh Taylor, attends Tŷ Hafan for respite care, and Darren says that he has wanted for some time to organise a third event to support us, after the pandemic and lockdown put a stop to most fundraising activities for almost two years. Says Darren: “Myself and the personal trainers of Lukaris PT Centre are raising money for Tŷ Hafan and also the Alzheimer's Society, as these are two charities which are close to our hearts.

“Having seen the care and support Tŷ Hafan provides for Demi, I was thoroughly impressed with the top-class facilities and staff down at Tŷ Hafan. After seeing this care and attention, it has become a charity that is close to my heart.

“I hope to raise a lot for Tŷ Hafan as I know this money will be put to good use and the wonderful attention the children get down at Tŷ Hafan will keep on being provided.”

So Darren has now decided to tackle a third fundraising challenge called the Five Days of Fitness.

“The challenge consists of five days in which a fitness challenge is to be completed on each day,” he says.

“All clients, along with their personal trainers, are being encouraged to have a go and are very welcome to take part.”

The challenge will begin on Monday, May 2, and finish on the weekend May 6-8. Here is Darren’s schedule:

Monday – burn 1500 calories on the Ski Erg Machine

Tuesday – burn 750 calories on the Air Assault Bike

Wednesday – 1,000 weight ball slams

Thursday – 5km run at Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar.

Saturday – walk up Pen-y-fan, the highest mountain in south Wales.
