amazing sister raises £1,100 in memory of her little brother

Twelve year old Emily Harmsworth has raised more than £1,100 in memory of her little brother Peter, who was a regular visitor at Tŷ Hafan before he died at the age of nine in 2019.

In this week’s Family Friday, Emily explains how she took part in four sponsored walks to raise this amazing sum!

In September 2021 I took on the challenge of four sponsored walks for Tŷ Hafan’s ‘walk a day in my shoes’ event  - one, five, ten and fifteen mile walks, a massive 31miles in total. All in memory of my little brother Peter, whose birthday was also in September, so this made it even more special to me.

The walks were spread out over the month because I was starting a new year in high school the same month. I had my Tŷ Hafan T-shirt and a collection book ready for my challenge and started on the 1st September.

The first walk I completed was one mile because the weather was not very good that day but I was still excited to get started and ended up going over my target and finished at 1.88miles and it took me 50 minutes. My Dad took a picture of me walking back to the house.

My second walk was 10 miles, around Caerphilly, the weather was lovely and the sun was out. I was a little over on this walk too, 10.04miles this took me about three hours and had my picture taken at Caerphilly castle.

My third walk was the biggest one of all 15 miles, from Caerphilly to Ystrad Mynach. With a few stops on the way to my brother's school Trinity Fields, the golden phone box in Ystrad town, Llanbradach monument and again at Caerphilly castle at the end of my walk. I also went over my target again 15.5 miles in 5 and 21 minutes. My feet were very, very sore after this walk!

Finally, my 5 mile walk from Penarth to Tŷ Hafan children's hospice, the wonderful Sophie, Sam, and her daughter joined me and helped me raise extra funds.

We had some photos of our journey too. This walk took a little longer than expected but we had so much fun on the way. I completed the five miles in a few hours and was welcomed back at the hospice by some of the staff. It was such a surprise them all shouting my name.

I had a wonderful time completing my walks and hope I raised more awareness with my bright green t-shirt.

I raised over £1,100 for Tŷ Hafan and I am so pleased I finally got to do something for them.

Hoping to do some more fundraising for Tŷ Hafan very soon!
