“It seems a very long time ago when I was elected to be President Elect of the WPCS back in 2018. Who back then would have foreseen what was in store not only for us but the rest of the world with the arrival of the Covid 19. Due to the pandemic my tenure as president was longer than I initially expected, I was due to hand over the reins in 2020, but have only recently done so.
“It is traditional that the President gets to nominate their preferred Charity; in my case I choose the very deserving Tŷ Hafan. It is also traditional that on the evening of the AGM we would auction donated items to raise funds for the Presidents chosen charity sadly this was not to be. I had done some fundraising by financing the making of a DVD, but I was determined that an auction would go ahead to raise as much as possible for Tŷ Hafan.
“With the help of a dear friend and fellow WPCS member Dr Glyn Jones we had put together 29 lots. Dr Glyn made a call to one of our ex Presidents Mr Terry Court of Brightwells and he offered to give all their expertise and would organise the auction for us, without any costs to us! They were so very professional I cannot list the amount of help they gave. I am extremely grateful for this generous support.
“When the lots were listed I noted lot 29 was a carriage drive, and it was my intention to be the winning bidder for this lot in any event. Then to donate the carriage drive back to Tŷ Hafan, in the hope it would give one of Tŷ Hafan’s hospice families an experience that they may not have had, that we take for granted. Also to have a display of all the Welsh sections for the family to enjoy.
“On Saturday the 19th of June it was to my great pleasure I was able to invite a truly inspirational hospice family, to Modris Kesans Kilvey Carriages who offered us the opportunity to hold the carriage ride at his home and stables in Swansea. What made the afternoon complete were the WPCS members that willingly and at their own time and expense brought their animals from all Welsh stud book sections to Honour our Fantastic Welsh Pony and Cob Breeds.
“I would also like to express very big thanks to Catrin Reed our young ambassador and her team for their fundraising efforts, Catrin held a spectacularly successful concert in Carmarthen before the pandemic hit.
“Despite a longer than expected tenure as president, it was a phenomenal experience and I am honoured to have provided such an experience for a Tŷ Hafan family and raise £13,300 for Tŷ Hafan. I hope that others decide to follow in the footsteps of the WPCS and help this amazing charity continue support the families that need them."
