reduce your 'fast fashion' footprint

We’re halfway into ‘Second Hand September’ and some well-known bloggers and sustainable fashion enthusiasts from across the country have been visiting Tŷ Hafan’s shops, finding some bargain treasures in-store — and we’re well on board!

Currently, almost 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon emissions are produced by the fashion industry and 11 million items of clothing are sent to landfill every week in the UK. And whether we like it or not, we’re a population of fast fashion culprits contributing to the fast fashion carbon footprint.

Many of us shop in popular high street shops for convenience; we’re guaranteed to find on-trend items that are affordable and of reasonable quality. The problem with this though, aside from the obvious environmental impact, is that we buy too often. We buy a garment, wear it a couple of times and then throw it away before proceeding to buy something new again.

However, trends are slowly evolving. We’ve seen a huge number of Welsh people getting behind Oxfam’s sustainable fashion campaign, ‘Second Hand September’ — an initiative that aims to reduce the number of people buying brand-new items in September, and to explore charity shops instead.

Tŷ Hafan has 27 shops across Wales, from Tenby to Aberystwyth and from Lampeter to Abergavenny, and each one of them is filled to the brim with high-quality donated items – some pre-loved and others with tags still attached! And we frequently see the odd Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Jimmy Choo pass through the doors…

So, as we’re well into ‘Second Hand September’ we thought we’d collate some of our favourite second hand Tŷ Hafan finds from bloggers, stylists and general charity shop-enthusiasts who have been promoting the importance of adopting sustainable fashion habits over the last few weeks.

Tŷ Hafan has it's very own upcycling and crafting project where we give donated items a new lease of life! Led by the very talented, Penny Collins, and her army of volunteers, crafting sessions are held for children and families, corporates on team-building days and anyone else who fancies a go at it! We also take Handcrafted on tour to various events and shows so keep an eye out and stuck in yourself...

Are you a sustainable fashion convert yet? Next time you fancy a new piece of clothing, reconsider your usual buying habits. Think about your fashion footprint and think about having a browse in your local Tŷ Hafan shop instead — you might be surprised at what you can find.
