Ty Hafan

#family friday

making the museum memorable for all

At Tŷ Hafan we’ve been lucky enough to enter into a partnership with National Museum Wales / Amgueddfa Cymru, that through funding with Children and the Arts, established the ‘Start Hospices Programme’ for the last 2 years — and we’re very excited for our next event... TOMORROW!

The aim of this programme was to make the museums accessible to the hospice families, and experience new and fun ways of engaging them in arts and culture whilst also being inclusive in its nature, and building memories to cherish forever.

Here’s what happened last year…

Our first Family Day in May 2018 was held at Cardiff Museum and we had a great turn out — including an adventure walk, under the sea stories, a musical sensory session by the Monet, and paint galore (and I got to dress up as an American Marine for the day)! Staff from the museum also came into the hospice to deliver sessions too which was so well received!

Our second day “from the bottom of the sea to the furthest star” was also held in January at Cardiff and was, again, a roaring success. Everyone was continuously developing and improving and we welcomed staff from St. Fagans to the team too. Also, I got to be Buzz Lightyear for the day… (you can see a pattern emerging here!!)

We’re extremely delighted to be awarded further funding to provide another 2 family days, 2 outreach days at the hospice and a sibling programme in 2019. We feel humbled that there is a dedicated team at the museum who are devoted in delivering memorable days for the families with a passion to make museums accessible to all.

Our second Family Day of 2019 “Fy Nghymru” / “My Wales” will be held tomorrow (May 11) at St Fagans National Museum of History — and we’re expecting to see around 100 people at the event! As a team we are primed and ready to make another memorable day, and to continue taking forward the fantastic partnership we have made over the last year. I want to thank the whole ‘Start Hospices’ programme team, from the museum to Tŷ Hafan staff, as we continue to provide such memorable days — and we hope the families enjoy the days as much as we do again this year! (And keep your eyes peeled for my next costume...)
