running for louis

This Sunday I’ll be running the London Marathon for Tŷ Hafan in memory of my beautiful son Louis and to say thank you to Tŷ Hafan for everything they have done for my family.

Louis was born in January 2013, but when he was a few months old we realised our journey into parenthood wasn't going to be straight forward. Louis had Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1 — the most severe type. We were told Louis probably wouldn’t see his first birthday, but our little superstar was a fighter, and we were blessed to have him with us for 3 years and 8 months.

When we were referred to Tŷ Hafan we were apprehensive, but it turned out to be the best decision we could have made. They understood us, they were compassionate and caring. And just like Louis, they helped us to smile, to live for the moment and to cherish every second together as a family.

Louis loved Tŷ Hafan and everything it brought into his life. Thanks to Tŷ Hafan, Louis was able to do things that most people take for granted. We took him swimming, he enjoyed playing in the specially adapted playground, they also have the most fantastic sensory room where Louis could just relax and chill out.

My training is going well. It’s been challenging as I spend a lot of time on the road, working in Cardiff and living in Pembrokeshire. I’ve been training with my cousin Lydia, who’s also running on Sunday, but she’s ran the London Marathon for Tŷ Hafan a few times so we’ll be helping each other along the way.

I find that exercise helps me to cope with my grief — going for a run or going for cycle clears my head and gives me a bit of space to just think.

I honestly don't think I would have coped emotionally without the help and support of Tŷ Hafan. The Tŷ Hafan ‘Dads group’ is great. The nurses, play workers, the entire staff are the most wonderful people in the world, but without donations, they aren't able to do their jobs.

I am lucky to have fantastic support from my family and friends, and over the years they have continued to raise money and awareness for Tŷ Hafan in memory of Louis. Thanks to them I have already met and exceeded my target for the Marathon. Our friend Claire recently held a ‘Ladies Day Fundraiser’ at our local rugby club — the support was overwhelming and they donated a huge amount to my page. I’m so grateful for every single person that has contributed to helping me reach my target. Knowing that so many people care will really help me on Sunday.

I know that Louis and all the other Tŷ Hafan children I have had the pleasure of meeting will help me every step of the way.
