S4C saddle up for Tŷ Hafan

Towards the end of last year - just as the popular 10k, Half Marathon and Survival of the Fittest events had come to an end – I decided to send an email to the rest of the S4C staff to see if anyone fancied another endurance event to train towards.

I proposed a bike ride over three days from our north Wales office in Caernarfon to our south Wales office in Cardiff, which is a distance of around 200 miles. There are a few keen cyclists at S4C who often join each other on a weekend morning ride so I expected maybe 5-10 people to show interest but I was slightly shocked when well over 20 people emailed back saying that they fancied the challenge.

It soon became clear that this could turn into a slightly bigger event than I initially anticipated and a lot of planning and organising would have to be done. With so many people taking part it also made sense that we should try to raise some money for charity too. As a broadcaster that represents the whole of Wales, Tŷ Hafan and Tŷ Gobaith seemed perfect, with the hospices located in both the north and the south of the country.

I set up a Just Giving team page for all of our cyclists to share with friends, families and colleagues to sponsor the cycle challenge. But in addition this, other fundraising events were arranged for all the staff to feel involved.

One such event was a games night, held in a function room at a local pub. We charged a £5 entrance fee (donated straight to the charity fund) and everyone was placed in teams to try and solve a series of puzzles, games and challenges. This (combined with a little bit of alcohol) proved to be a huge success – and was topped off with a hotly contested paper airplane competition!

A Bake Sale was also organised, where colleagues brought in cakes to be sold for a minimum contribution of 50p per slice. It probably says a lot about the people who work here that we raised quite a lot of money through this!

And for three days, to coincide with the bike ride itself, a static bike was placed in the S4C reception area where all the staff members were encouraged to hop on and take turns in an attempt to match the same distance as the ride from Caernarfon to Cardiff. This event truly brought out the competitive spirit in some of our colleagues! It also raised money for the fund – as well as quite a bit of sweat!

Ahead of the bike ride, we were visited by Tŷ Hafan Ambassador, Lindsay, who explained how the money raised would be used to make a real difference to the families who attend Tŷ Hafan. We were shown poignant video clips which really brought the message home, and no doubt upgraded a few £10 donations to £20!

I’m pleased to say that the cycle ride was a huge success and an unforgettable experience for all of us who took part. We didn’t have a single puncture and even the weather behaved itself! It was a pleasure to ride for such great charities and we hope there will be an opportunity to raise money for both Tŷ Hafan and Tŷ Gobaith again in the future.
