Team Tŷ Hafan Volunteers

Owen Jandrell, a graduate from Cardiff Metropolitan University, spent time at Tŷ Hafan's Head Office after completing his Marketing Management degree. Find out more about Owen's time with the team below.

Having visited the Tŷ Hafan head office a couple of times, the only thing that was left was the hospice. The hospice is of course the centre of Tŷ Hafan, and part of the charity that directly makes a difference to the lives of many.

However, my personal opinion is that the title of ‘hospice’ can be misleading. When people think of a hospice, they tend to think of a white room with machines and white coats, and I am not exempt from this. However, Tŷ Hafan does not feel like a hospice, not because of a lack of medical equipment, or staff (these as a matter of fact are in abundance), but because of the theme of the facility, along with the cheerful feel you get from everyone you see. The main room is more like a large lounge with home comforts scattered throughout. Not something you would traditionally expect to find in a hospice.

My second day was spent with the rare and slightly bizarre opportunity to become a model to showcase Tŷ Hafan’s charity shop clothes! With first-hand experience of where the money goes, I was of course eager to help. Not only does the hospice show clearly that all the money is put to an excellent cause, but I have also been lucky enough to see parts of the expansion and growth of Tŷ Hafan, including the new adventure playground, and I was able to witness the opening of a £400,000 hydrotherapy pool, which will help all of the children an enormous amount. These are two prime examples of how money donated to Tŷ Hafan is put to use in a way that will, quite literally, change lives for the better.
