heulwen’s story – reiki volunteer

My name is Heulwen. I’m a reiki practitioner and began volunteering at Tŷ Hafan in August 2019. I wanted to provide reiki treatments for the hard-working staff. I attended the hospice weekly to give a little bit of care back to the selfless people that give so much to others.

I am always in awe when visiting Tŷ Hafan. It is such an incredible place. The services and work that every individual provides go above and beyond people's expectations. They are so thoughtful and caring to all the families they work with and support.

I am aware of many families who have found themselves at Tŷ Hafan. Every single one of them always comments on the endeavours of its tremendous staff and I wanted to give them a little something in return.

I’m passionate about wellbeing, relaxation, self-care, complementary therapies, supporting others and helping to make a positive difference to someone's day.

As I am based in the Barry area, I wanted to offer my reiki services at the hospice in Sully to help and support the staff. They all need to take some time out and look after themselves and their wellbeing. I provided reiki treatments in the complementary therapy room to help staff to reduce stress, promote relaxation and allow them some time to focus on their own wellbeing.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing technique which works alongside conventional medicine where the practitioner channels universal life force energy through their hands to the recipient. Reiki is a natural healing energy activated by intention.

Reiki energy travels to where it is needed and works on the mind, body and soul bringing balance and harmony.

It’s so important to make time for ourselves, we all need to look after our wellbeing and by doing different things, can have such a positive impact on our health, mental health and wellbeing.

I really miss my weekly visits and seeing the amazing Tŷ Hafan family, I look forward to returning.

Staff Testimonials:

"Heulwen’s reiki sessions allowed me to go into a deep meditative zone where the hour just passed through and any excess ‘weight’ was lifted. Thank you, Heulwen.” – Stuart, IT.

"I was not expecting to feel as benefitted as I did following the treatment. Heulwen very quickly put me at ease and it felt she really 'connected' and was vested in my wellbeing. Definitely an experience I would repeat.” – Tracy, Head of Community Services

"I was able to relax deeply and completely despite being at work - it was an oasis of calm in what at times was a busy or stressful day. I would leave the session feeling refreshed and ready to return to tasks with a less cluttered mind.” – Abi, Complimentary Therapist
